Tips for the Season

Your Home:

Your heating system is probably most important

  • Top off your oil or propane tanks so you won't get caught short if there's a sudden cold snap.
  • If you have a fireplace this is a good time to have your chimney cleaned and checked (including the spark screen at the top) so you won't need to worry about any accidental fires.

Check for worn out caulking, weather stripping and cracks

  • Check the caulking around doors and windows. Caulking is designed to seal up any crack between them and the walls of your home, but over time even the best caulk loses its ability to seal out cold air.
  • Check weather stripping on your windows and door sweeps. Replace any that are worn, cracked or broken.
  • Replacing worn caulking and weather stripping will not only cut down on winter drafts, it will help keep mice or other 'critters' out of your house.

Outside

  • Trim the trees and shrubs around your home.
  • Check you sidewalks and driveway for any cracks that have developed over the summer. Now is the time to fix them or else water can get into them and freeze, making them bigger.
  • Turn off the water supply to all outside water taps and drain the hoses. Any water left in the pipes could freeze and burst them, causing a messy flood when warm weather arrives next spring.
  • Make sure that all outdoor lights are in correct working order.

Your Auto:

  •  Make sure your car has the correct amount of antifreeze.
  •  Inspect your windshield wipers and make sure you have wiper fluid.
  • If you drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle, ensure that the 4-wheel drive system is in good working order.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car.
